2013 Junior Race Update

Hello Junior Flyers and Sponsors,

The road training is well underway and the birds are coming as expected, and trapping incredibly well.

They have had numerous short tosses, 6-11 miles, to the north, south and east around the Santa Rosa area. Over the last few days they have had three tosses between 20-25 miles. As expected with the first longer toss of 25 miles (a pretty straight shot home and relatively flat), it took them around 90 minutes to get home which is totally normal in my several years training from this spot, but the repeat toss the following day saw them make it back in less than 40 minutes. They didn’t even circle before hitting the landing board. Their next toss, around 20 miles, was to the city of Sonoma which is their first adventure through the hills and they came fine. Going forward, another toss to Sonoma, and then two tosses from south Napa and they will be ready to make the leap to “The Valley”; Fairfield, Winters, Woodland, east of the Sacramento Airport and beyond. Once I get them to around 50 miles, probably mid next week or so, I will start posting some toss results so you can see how your birds are progressing. Check the website periodically for toss results
Speaking of results, I am posting the physical inventory I took on 9/25. Out a few birds from the original inventory, but doing pretty well given the day to day challenges a pigeon must face.

Finally, the SOC club has decided to fly the race on Highway 80. In all likelihood the release location will be Boreal Ridge (same as last year), aka “Top of the Mountain”.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for future updates.

UPDATE: 09 July 2013

Hello Junior Flyers and Sponsors,

After a challenging first couple of months I am happy to report that all is well at the Junior Loft and we are on schedule for our November race. We had some illness in the loft in late May and early June and unfortunately some of the birds didn’t make it. All of those birds have been replaced and the loft has an inventory of 53 birds, which means everyone who entered a bird has one in the loft. Chuck Scurini, Armando De La O and I vaccinated and poxed all of the birds, and the 9th & 10th flights have been clipped. Because of the aforementioned challenge, the birds got a late start out of the loft but are now out and flying and beginning to flock. Some are a bit lazier than others and are being “coaxed” to join in the aerial funfest. They are trapping extremely well, swarming the trap entrance when I call them in.
The hawks have been harassing them regularly, but so far only a couple of minor hits from which the birds have quickly recovered. Fingers crossed the birds are quick learners. On a business note, I have not received perch/entry fees for some of the birds and I will be reaching out to the sponsors individually to collect the fees. Also, if you need to get a hold of me email or a text message is generally best.
We are a couple of months away from confirming the actual race course which will depend to a large part on the success of the new Bay Cities Combine YB Race Stations.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for future updates which will be issued periodically.
